Ahead of 30’s release, Adele gave a very candid interview to Rolling Stone about her life while creating the album and going through her divorce from Simon Konecki. The singer addressed the public reaction surrounding her divorce announcement (Adele has a fake Twitter she uses to see what people are saying about her), befriending Jennifer Lawrence in Los Angeles, and how her new romance with sports agent Rich Paul really blossomed.
Of the divorce reaction, all the tweets from fans excited about it being fodder for her new album did trigger some feelings in Adele initially. “During something like that, that kind of significant thing to happen in life, your mind sort of goes to those places: ‘Why don’t they like me? Why would they write that if they’ve followed me for 10 years?’” Adele said. “But in reality, that’s not their responsibility. In reality, their responsibility as a fan is to want a good record and to hope I deliver. So I took it with a pinch of salt, and it was fine.”
Adele added that, in her relationship, she never really felt settled, happy, or fully present. “It made me really sad,” she said. “Then having so many people that I don’t know know that I didn’t make that work… it fucking devastated me. I was embarrassed. No one made me feel embarrassed, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.”
Adele took the time after her divorce to find herself. She settled into her Los Angeles life and even befriended two other industry stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicole Richie.
“They humanized me because I had avoided talking to anyone that was ever famous in any capacity, because I was like, ‘Well, I’m not famous.’ I’m very British like that,” she said of Lawrence and Richie’s impact on her. “We never spoke about work, which was amazing, because most of the time when I catch up with someone, they want to know all about my work, and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to talk about that. Can we talk about something else? I’m knackered.’”
Eventually, Adele met her now-boyfriend Rich Paul. Celebrity gossip Instagram DeuxMoi outed the relationship before she could: “I didn’t really tell many of my friends at the beginning because I wanted to keep it to myself,” she said. Adele and Paul first appeared together at a discount mall. “None of them believed it!”
She now describes her relationship with Paul as “incredible, openhearted, and [the] easiest [one]” she has ever been in because of the self-growth and healing she’s done.
