Zendaya Wears a Bandeau and Column Skirt at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2021

Zendaya is making history tonight as the youngest-ever CFDA Fashion Icon Award winner this evening at the New York City award ceremony, and the actress and her stylist Law Roach went all out creating a look to reflect the honor.

Zendaya took to the red carpet wearing a red Vera Wang bandeau and skirt set. She accessorized with a diamond necklace and ring. Her appearance comes shortly after Meghan Markle also had a big red fashion moment in a Carolina Herrera gown in New York City.

Zendaya spoke to InStyle for its November issue about perfecting her red carpet poses. Does she practice? “Sometimes I do, actually,” she said. “When I put on an outfit, I will occasionally look at it in the mirror and see what poses work with the silhouette. I do think a little bit about that.”

She also shared what advice she’d give her younger self on the cusp of her first red carpet appearance. “Keep doing what you’re doing,” she said. “When I was 14 and at my first movie premiere, my outfit was a bunch of stuff that I had from Target. And I thought I was fly. I felt cool. To this day, I think that’s really all that matters. Then you know you’re doing the right thing.”

Roach reflected to ELLE.com earlier this year on what it was like dressing Zendaya the person versus Zendaya in character as Marie in Malcolm & Marie. “I think there are some similarities,” he recalled. “It’s still Zendaya’s body. It’s still Zendaya’s physicality, which is beautiful. When we do things together, we always create a narrative or a character. There has to be a story behind why the clothes are chosen. Who is she at that moment? It’s always been my job to create that narrative, to bring the pieces to the story. Then she takes them and becomes whoever it is and evokes whatever emotion we decided on. I put that into designing for Marie, too.”
