Both People and Us Weekly have devoted part of their issues this week to Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik’s relationship as they sort through the aftermath of Zayn’s alleged dispute with Gigi’s mother Yolanda Hadid, the couple’s breakup, and what their future as co-parents to their one-year-old daughter, Khai, looks like.
Gigi wants a future where Zayn is involved in their daughter’s life, a source close to Gigi told People. At the same time, she did meet with lawyers about custody issues, Us Weekly was told.
“Yolanda is very upset with Zayn, but Gigi has made it clear that her daughter needs her dad,” a source close to Gigi told People. “Gigi will do everything she can to make sure they co-parent in a civil way.”
A source close to Gigi additionally told People that Yolanda has long had issues with Zayn and his treatment of her daughter. “Yolanda is, of course, very protective of Gigi,” the source said. “She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild. She has had some issues with Zayn. He has a complicated personality, and she thinks he could treat Gigi better. It’s been hard at times for Gigi to live with him.”
Last Wednesday, Zayn pleaded no contest to four charges of harassment against Yolanda and Gigi; he was fined and is “on 90 days probation for each count, totaling 360 days,” TMZ wrote.
Additionally, Zayn “must complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program,” and have no contact with Yolanda. While Yolanda alleged in court documents that Zayn “shoved her,” the singer denied having any physical contact with her.
Two Malik sources also spoke to People about the situation with Gigi and Zayn. One said that the two have “continued to fight over Khai. It was a super toxic relationship.”
A second Malik source denied the fighting claim, saying the two “are not fighting [and] are actively and amicably working to find the best way to co-parent now.”
Us Weekly, meanwhile, was told by a source that Gigi has spoken with lawyers following Zayn’s alleged dispute. “Gigi met with her lawyers last week,” the source said. “She also met with new lawyers to start helping with custody issue. There will be conversations about custody.”
That source noted that Zayn “will always have to be a part of her life,” but Gigi finds his and Yolanda’s alleged altercation “distressing.”
Gigi released a statement through her rep on the alleged dispute, saying simply, “Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.”
Zayn released a statement on his Twitter, explaining why he pleaded no contest and his disappointment at the news becoming public shortly before court documents came out:
As you all know I am a private person and I very much want to create a safe and private space for my daughter [Khai] to grow up in. A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. In an effort to protect that space for her, I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago. This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been “leaked” to the press. I am hopeful though for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared and more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.
