The black comedy “One Battle After Another” with the unknown and bright acting of Leonardo DiCaprio is being released in Ukrainian. It’s obvious why people will marvel at the new film by 11-time Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson, which is already being called a masterpiece.

Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a huge hip, a drug addict and an alcoholic who is in trouble with his rival Prof. (Teyana Taylor). The film is based on the novel “Vinokrai” by the American writer, an outspoken representative of postmodernism, Thomas Pynchon. This novel, published in 1990, was published in California in 1984, around the time of Ronald Reagan's re-election to another term, and speaks about the rebellious culture of the hipsters of that time, political repression and the so-called War on Drugs. “Vinokrai” is a complex postmodernist work, filled with humor and allusions, and has been ambiguously received: it has been called “a critical commentary on modern American culture.”
The director of the scene, Paul Thomas Anderson, is one of the most famous directors of today, an 11-time Oscar nominee and a laureate of all the key film festivals in the world – Cannes, Venice, Berlin. Among some of his most famous films is the episode “Primary Thread” with Daniel Day-Lewis in the role of a New York fashion designer who lives with folding toxic centipedes with his muse Alma (Vicki Krispi), (6 Oscar nomination); “The Meister” with Goaquin Fenik and “Lokrichnaya Pitsa” with Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson planned to film Pynchon's novel over 20 years ago. Work began in 2024, and the director moved the film to the present day from the mid-1980s. Apparently, one of the first to play the leading role was confirmed by DiCaprio, who was planning to work with Anderson for 25 years, even if he starred in his film “Boogie Nights”, and also produced “Titanic”. And now Anderson DiCaprio himself, having played a role that tops the list of his masterpieces, critics call him “the emotional heart of his acclaimed action-dramas.”
“DiCaprio plays the role of Bob – a huge radical, who now spends his days drinking alcohol and cigars, wearing a cardigan robe and hat, and at the same time desperately trying to get rid of the stolen dong. There is love and fear in his eyes, one can see how deeply he experiences everything,” writes the BBC in its review.
In the film, DiCaprio demonstrates his comedic talent while also being an emotionally sensitive actor. It’s great to watch out for him in some of the most funny scenes – he’s drinking or lying on the sofa watching a movie; And in dynamic scenes there are chases and shootouts, where the hero tries to turn his back. DiCaprio creates the image of a wicked hero, which he sings, and in an interview the actor says that the inspiration for the image was his favorite character – the Dude from “The Great Lebowski” and the film “Dog” noon” with Al Pacino, zokrema, fanaticism of this character.
One of the highlights of the film is Teyana Taylor in the role of Perfida Beverly Gills, the wife of DiCaprio's hero and the extremely cruel Colonel Stephen Jay Lockjaw (Sean Penn). An American dancer, model and actor, Taylor is also a choreographer of Beyoncé and Jay-Z videos, and has also released a number of solo albums. And although Tayana appeared in several films – Zokrema, another part of the film “Coming to America”, “One Battle After Another” itself – she is the first great work in cinema. In the role of Perfida, Tayana at the same time becomes a beautiful warrior. It’s hard for Varto to remember the scene in the hero’s flashbacks: she’s a driver, she’s practicing shooting with a machine gun, and her mother turns to DiCaprio’s character with the words: “You’re not suitable for my daughter. revolutionaries. And you look so ruined.”
The role of the cruel and cynical antagonist is played by Sean Penn, and critics seem to think that the actor could win an Oscar for portraying the image of Colonel Lockjaw. Zokrema, who played Sean Penn's best role in calling this film Steven Spielberg.
“One Battle After Another” became the most expensive film in the career of Paul Thomas Anderson – his budget totaled over 140 million dollars. The surveys took place in the states of Texas and California, and entire places with their own infrastructure were used for them.
