On the 13th of November, the best film “Black Feathers”, which is called Benedict Cumberbatch's best work, was released in Ukrainian. Film watcher Elizaveta Sushko spoke with the British actor especially for vogue.ua.
We catch up with Cumberbatch at the Berlin Film Festival, where the film “Black Feathers” premiered. Smiling and renewed energy after the premiere of his film (the actor also acted as a producer), Benedict Cumberbatch walked into the room – and immediately remembered himself. Over the past 30 years, he has been telling journalists about his burying hands like the “snowbirds” that appear in the film, about those who chose Marvel for his choice of roles, thus capping the film “Black.” pirʼya”, that he was ready to collaborate with a debutant director.

Two Oscar nominee Cumberbatch is credited for his role as Sherlock in the eponymous 2010 BBC series Rock. Already in 2013, he joined the powerful production company SunnyMarch with his friend Adam Acland and subsequently often plays in independent projects, combining them with big-budget Marvel films, among which he has a leading role in “Doctor Strange”. The actor knows that the group is growing for two reasons. First of all, it’s not often that he gets to play his role-play, so the rest of the time he’s associated with Marvel. Alternatively, you can leverage your popularity to make stories that are important for debutant directors to earn money from.

The film “Black Feathers” is a screen adaptation of the debut book by the English writer Max Porter, which both the current director of the series, Dylan Southern, and Cumberbatch himself cringed at when they first read it. Yak i Pershodzherelo, a film centered on the theme of grief. Cumberbatch's character is a comic book artist. Vin raptovo spends his squad and self-tightening with two blue ones, which is not easy for you. Through the pain of loss, the main character loses touch with reality – and begins to grow a great spirit, it’s amazing that nothing has come from his little ones. The mayor re-examines the whole family, but it is impossible to understand: perhaps this dark guest himself will help them find the path to a new life.
This topic resonates with Cumberbatch’s filmography. He himself knows that those expenses, the life of his homeland, are especially significant for him. “Our company is a family business: we and our production partners have three children,” says the actor. “I think whoever has it.” And the devastation that we are depriving our children of. Therefore, we are left with those inheritances of the future changes, the policy of intolerance, the “Swedish culture”, the fear of mortality or, for example, the obsession with living.”

“Black feathers” could be an actor's cry, but, as it turned out, Cumberbatch does not insist on working with children, neither are he professional actors, nor his other partners – crows.
One of the most beautiful images in the film is Kruk as a sign of grief. He played a real actor who used his body and plasticity to create the image of a great bird. Cumberbatch admitted that playing complex emotional scenes in tandem with a two-meter-long raven was even more disorienting.
“Protecting such a living contact, like an actor, who understands your language, you don’t reject it from a digital replica, like from CGI. But there are living hundreds, and they have already quickly spread between us for a few seconds. The partner created for me Ideal minds for work simply have their presence, all their beauty, playing with me in tandem,” Benedict Cumberbatch shared from his treasures.

And although one of the film’s themes is the fear of identity, old age and death, the actor himself seems to have no such phobias, and until his life, after long careers, he undergoes beauty treatments, including spas and facial massage. “I don’t even remember the beginning of my career, but I think that I have never been able to separate the time for work and the time for myself. Those songs that you train for a role can maddeningly flow into your behavior in another hour. I, perhaps, have already realized that my mother knew from time to time that I was Sherlock’s husband, because when I came home I was much calmer,” the actor notes.
As a first-timer, Cumberbatch was given the opportunity to become immersed in the life of his character, who is going through the stage of grief, little by little, searching for a new way out. The actor believes that “at that moment, when you are trying to overcome the tears, it is not true. So you have to simply believe that it is not true.” Moreover, emotionality is not a common thing for the British: Cumberbatch’s hero understands that emotions are not good to show to children. According to the actor’s words, this character is a typical representative of the middle age of modern London, streaming and closing, and he knows this middle life well.
In the midst of grief, Cumberbatch does not care that the line “Black Feathers” is a story about death. For a new film about life, there is no script that brings the end to an end. Like the hands that are often associated in mythology and traditions with death, Benedict learns from these birds that it is brighter and more marvelous.
“When we worked with our hands on the hunt, I often noticed that sparkling black flame on the back of our feather. I think about how much the sparkle stinks, and about the wonderful facts about crows that we used to write down in layouts. One of them is that crows can save intergenerational anger. If you twisted your hand, you can be attacked by birds that you have never seen before – and this may be the result. Neumovirni Birds, wait a minute, what’s the point of philosophy.”
The film “Black Feathers” can be seen in Ukrainian distribution since 13 November
