The 2021 Grammys won’t be graced with Rihanna’s presence tonight, and the coronavirus pandemic isn’t entirely to blame for that. RiRi has no Grammy nominations, as the singer hasn’t released any new music since 2016’s Anti (to the dismay of many fans). Only presenters, nominees, and performers are being permitted to attend the Los Angeles ceremony in person due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Rihanna has been photographed in L.A. this week, though. She went out to Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica on Thursday, apparently for the third time that week, according to the Daily Mail.
Rihanna addressed fans’ hopes she would release new music in 2021 on her Instagram at the beginning of the year. She captioned her first post of the year, “new year’s resolution: apply the pressure,” and a fan commented, “Resolution should be releasing the album.” Rihanna replied,”this comment is sooo 2019. grow up,” then added, “2021 energy.”
Speaking with British Vogue last March, she did share a little about her next music project, so it isn’t a total pipe dream: “I can’t say when I’m going to drop,” she said of her ninth album. “But I am very aggressively working on music.”
“I don’t want my albums to feel like themes,” she added. “There are no rules. There’s no format. There’s just good music, and if I feel it, I’m putting it out.”
The reggae album, by the way, “is happening,” she said. “I feel like I have no boundaries. I’ve done everything — I’ve done all the hits, I’ve tried every genre – now I’m just, I’m wide open. I can make anything that I want.”
