Why Miley Cyrus Skipped the Grammys in 2021

Anyone hoping to see Miley Cyrus among the small crowd of faces at this year’s Grammy Awards will have to wait until at least next year. The singer isn’t at the Los Angeles ceremony tonight because she isn’t nominated or performing. Cyrus’ November 2020 album Plastic Hearts isn’t eligible for the ceremony this year, as it was released after the September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020 window.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Grammy producers are only allowing presenters, nominees, and performers to attend in person. “The performers and nominees are each other’s audience,” Grammy Awards executive producer Ben Winston told Variety before the show, “so it’s a room of incredible musicians, all safely distanced from each other, and every 45 minutes a new four groups come in and the [previous] four go out.”

Cyrus did recently release her music video for “Angels Like You,” which was shot at a concert she was able to do that was COVID-19 restriction compliant.

“Angels Like You video OuT NoW! Shot on 2/7/21 at #TikTokTailgate, the first outdoor covid compliant concert of its size since the pandemic changed our lives forever,” Cyrus wrote on her Instagram. “I never would have thought when I wrote ‘Angels’ that the first time I would be performing this song or shooting a music video would be in a time like this. It’s been almost a year without live music. I desperately miss the connection it brings. I miss hearing your voices ring out in harmony with my own. I miss YOU. With vaccines becoming more available the dream of us all being reunited is getting closer to becoming a reality. We just have to do our part. I hope you love what I have made for you & that you feel for just these few minutes that you were here in the crowd at the show with us. Soon…. 🕊”
