Meghan Markle Spoke With the Queen to Share Condolences Over Prince Philip

Meghan Markle will not be attending Prince Philip’s funeral in person this Saturday, as her doctor didn’t clear her to fly because of her pregnancy. But the Duchess of Sussex did reach out to the Queen to share her condolences over the loss of the Queen’s husband and Harry’s grandfather, Us Weekly reports.

On Saturday, a source told the outlet that “Meghan and Harry have already spoken to the Queen to express their sympathies.”

Publicly, the couple dedicated the homepage of their non-profit Archewell to Prince Philip on Friday. They shared a brief tribute to him which read, “In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh 1921-2021. Thank you for your service… You will be greatly missed.”

Meghan spoke to Oprah during her and Harry’s interview that aired in March about her relationship with the Queen.

She began by specifying that there’s a difference between the royal family, the business and the royal family, and the family. “It’s hard for people to distinguish the two because it’s a family business, right? So there’s the family, and then there’s the people that are running the institution,” she started.

“The Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me. I mean, we had one of our first joint engagements together,” Meghan continued. “She asked me to join her, and I went on the train. And we had breakfast together that morning and she gave me a beautiful gift and I just really loved being in her company, and I know we were in the car—yeah, she gave me some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace—and we were in the car going between engagements. And she has a blanket that sits across her, her knees, for warmth and it was chilly and she was like, Meghan, come on, and put it over my knees as well.”

On Monday morning, Prince Harry, now in the U.K., released a personal statement about Philip’s passing where he referenced the impact that Philip had on his, Meghan’s, their son Archie’s, and their unborn daughter’s lives.

My grandfather was a man of service, honour, and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm—and also because you never knew what he might say next.He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.He has been a rock for Her Majesty the Queen with unparalleled devotion, by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, “Oh do get on with it!”So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself. You will be sorely missed, but always remembered—by the nation and the world. Meghan, Archie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always hold a special place for you in our hearts.“Per Mare, Per Terram.” (“By sea, by land,” the motto of the Royal Marines.)
