Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Pledge $112,765 to Feeding Britain

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have made their first big, public donation during the coronavirus pandemic. Town & Country reports that the couple is donating £90,000 (or more than $112,000) to Feeding Britain, which helps provide food to families living in poverty in the UK. The funds are excess profits from the BBC broadcast of their royal wedding in May 2018.

There’s a personal tie to the charity: The Archbishop of Canterbury, who presided over Meghan and Harry’s wedding, is the president of Feeding Britain. Per T&C, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke to him in a phone call around the time UK schools were closing to tell him that they wanted the money to be donated to Feeding Britain.

Meghan and Harry’s spokesperson confirmed the donation, saying that the two were thrilled the money was going to such an important cause.

“The Duke and Duchess were able to speak to the Archbishop recently, and were moved to hear all about the work Feeding Britain was doing to support people during COVID-19,” Meghan and Harry’s spokesperson said. “They have particularly fond memories of their visit to the citizens’ supermarket in Birkenhead, especially the generosity and compassion of everyone working there to help others. They are delighted to be able to ensure this money is donated to such a great cause.”
