Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Are Making a Bid for the New York Mets

Former Yankees player Alex Rodriguez and Bronx native Jennifer Lopez are reportedly taking steps to become part owners of a New York baseball team—but the Mets specifically, not the Yankees. Variety reports the engaged couple have retained JPMorgan Chase to raise capital for a bid.

The Wilpon Family, the current owners of the Mets, announced in December that they were negotiating an 80% sale of the Major League Baseball team to hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen. The deal fell through, but valued the team at $2.6 billion.

Variety estimates J.Lo and A-Rod’s combined net worth at $700 million. That means the power couple is going to need help from partners to become part owners.

The move may be surprising to some, given J.Lo and A-Rod’s history with the Yankees. But Rodriguez also has deep ties with the Mets. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, A-Rod revealed he considered signing with the Mets during free agency in 2000. He was also a fan of the team as a child.

“Growing up in Miami, I was a huge Mets fan,” Rodriguez said. “Keith Hernandez was my favorite player. And I thought I would make great concessions to go play for the Mets. And I thought it was just a great story for baseball, it would’ve been a great story for me to play for the team I grew up watching. And I thought Mets-Yankees would have been a great story.”

Lopez and Rodriguez recently postponed their wedding plans in light of the COVID-19 crisis. “Honestly, I really don’t know what’s going to happen now as far as dates or anything like that,” Lopez told Ellen Degeneres in April. “We’re just kind of in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. So, again, it’s something we’re just going to have to wait and see in a few months how this all pans out.”
