Two days after suspending her presidential campaign, Senator Elizabeth Warren reclaimed the narrative on Saturday Night Live in a viral behind-the-scenes bit. In the clip, she and Kate McKinnon tried their hand at the ‘Flip the Switch’ TikTok challenge. What is the Flip the Switch challenge?
The challenge is set to the 2018 Drake song “Nonstop” and typically involves two people standing in front of a bathroom mirror filming themselves. One participant stands closer to the mirror filming while the other person stands further from the front, usually dancing. At the moment in the track where Drake sings, “I just flipped the switch,” the pair swaps places. Sometimes the screen cuts to black before the switch, with the participants often changing clothing or some other element of their look in the process.
Where did it begin?
Like many TikTok trends, nailing down its exact origins are tricky. Time Magazine credits the couple behind the account @dallinxbella with starting the trend. Meanwhile, Know Your Meme tracks the trend’s start with two videos posted in November 2018. TikTok compilations of the flip the switch challenge began popping up on YouTube in early December 2018.
Which celebrities have conquered the challenge so far?
Drake himself commented on Warren and McKinnon’s triumphant video, writing, “Wow I need to come home.” But it looks like he could approve several celebrity editions of the trend. J.Lo and A-Rod filmed a version of the challenge where they swap outfits, hoop earrings included.
Before the couple’s video, celebs including Emily Ratajkowski and Camila Cabello flipped the switch. Ratajkowski traded her vintage Bernie Sanders tee for the Justin Bieber graphic and American flag speedo of the Fat Jewish. Cabello traded ‘fits with pal Calvit Jr. Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest even filmed the challenge on the set of their talk show.
