A historic day for the royal family has begun—Commonwealth Day, which will also be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s final event as working senior royals—and Kate Middleton dressed for the occasion. The Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband in the Queen’s procession. She wore a red Catherine Walker coat dress with a matching fascinator. William complemented her in a suit.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s appearance today comes after they wrapped their three-day tour of Ireland last week. Two days ago, they shared a highlight reel from that trip on their Instagram, writing, “Some of our favourite moments from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to Ireland 🇮🇪🇬🇧 Thank you to everyone for the wonderfully warm Irish welcome! #RoyalVisitIreland.”
Kate and William are uniting with Meghan and Harry publicly for the first time in months and since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their plans to step back from their senior royal family roles.
Meghan and Harry did a series of final events over this past week during their visit to the UK. The two are expected to return to Canada shortly after Commonwealth Day, where their son Archie remains.
When sharing their decision on Instagram, Meghan and Harry stated their intention to create out a new role for themselves where they’ll be financially independent. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they said. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”
