The Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William will not stop Meghan Markle and Prince Harry from stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family. In fact, Hello! reports, they are dedicated to helping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex start their transition in a speedy fashion.
A source told the outlet that senior courtiers started discussions today about how to accomplish that. Those talks will involve speaking with foreign governments about details and hammering out how exactly Meghan and Harry’s financing will work going forward.
“They want to try to do something different and the family is resolved to help them see if it can be done,” an insider told the outlet. “There is a lot to do, but people are calm and focused on making this work.”
A second source told Hello! that reports the royal family was totally blindsided and angry are hyperbolic. “People are a bit surprised and a bit hurt by it all, but they are family,” the source said. “They want to help the couple try to find an answer to [this] question. It’s not straightforward. They need to hear more about what kind of work they are planning to do but it’s not a case of saying ‘this isn’t possible.’ That’s now what has to be worked through.”
Meghan and Harry released their statement yesterday afternoon, expressing their intent to become financially independent royal family members. They said:
After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties.
