Meghan Markle and Prince Harry didn’t intend to stay in England long after making their announcement that they will be stepping back as senior members of the royal family. People and Harper’s Bazaar report the couple left their son Archie in Victoria, Canada, to go back to London to work this week. They will be flying back to him shortly.
Both outlets report that they left Archie in the care of Meghan’s friend Jessica Mulroney and a nanny. Royal reporter Omid Scobie reported for Harper’s Bazaar that the two are expected to fly back to Canada tonight. The couple, of course, have not confirmed their private plans publicly.
A friend told Harper’s Bazaar that “they’re feeling confident. Harry and Meghan are aware that they’ll be criticized, perhaps even vilified, for taking control of their lives but creating a positive future for themselves and their family has always been their priority.”
Scobie also reported for Harper’s Bazaar that talk of the royal family being livid and blindsided about Meghan and Harry’s surprise announcement is inaccurate. A high-ranking palace aide told the outlet that the reaction in the family was “far from the dramatic emotional response described by some—nobody was ‘incandescent with rage’ and nobody is about to punish anyone. The speed at which this now needs to be dealt with is not ideal but the plans themselves are not a problem. This is not a ‘crisis,’ it’s a case of helping the couple reach their goal.”
Hello! echoed this sentiment earlier when a source told the British outlet that “people are a bit surprised and a bit hurt by it all, but they are family. They want to help the couple try to find an answer to [this] question. It’s not straightforward. They need to hear more about what kind of work they are planning to do but it’s not a case of saying ‘this isn’t possible.’ That’s now what has to be worked through.”
