Tate Modern, one of the world's most famous light museums, hosted the premiere of the fourth installment of VARTA's documentary film, dedicated to Ukrainian historians. The VARTA film project consists of four short and poetic film novels, which show those who wear Ukrainian uniforms and protect Ukrainian independence. The fourth part is called “Vona” and talks about the women of Ukraine – combat doctors and other health workers.

VARTA is a series of documentary stories launched in 2022 by Ukrainian photographer Maryana Shafroraz and director Yevgen Matvienko. The creative spirit suddenly had a very clear and coherent idea – to change the emphasis in the Ukrainian information space and show the war not through the subdivisions, but the features that stand behind them.

Among the heroes of the films are Ukrainian helicopter pilots who won combat victories on the Mi-8 and Mi-24 during the battles for Kiev and Irpin, during the liberation of Kherson and the operation regaining control over the island of Serpents. The center also has crews of tankers, pilots of civilians, and women and men – doctors and soldiers on the front line.

The producer of the project, Ukrainian photographer Mar'yana Shafro, says: “The war in Ukraine has brought a lot of pain to all of us. Without completely destroying us, we can turn it into the power of that action. This is how the project was born for me.” VARTA. I understand that this contribution is to learn from the chronicles of the new history of Ukraine.”

Director Yevgen Matviyenko, who is making a film that works closely with the military on the front lines, says: “I’m tired of learning about Ukrainian heroes posthumously. It’s more painful – rumors Their stories, since there are no more of them and I can’t relate to them. Therefore, I decided to save their memories and portraits of their lives in order to give them a voice.”

By the time of the premiere in London, viewers will be able to meet Ukrainian directors and some of the Ukrainian heroes who became participants in the films. The evening ended with a beneficial auction to support Ukrainian heroes whose stories were shown in VARTA films.
