Emmy Rossum’s baby is born, whom the world only learned about after she arrived! It turns out the ‘Shameless’ star was secretly pregnant, and the actress shared never-before-seen maternity photos to celebrate.
Surprise: Emmy Rossum is a mom! The 34-year-old Shameless star managed to keep her pregnancy a total secret, thus setting up fans for the biggest surprise when she revealed the happy news of her daughter’s arrival on May 25 (Emmy’s first child with husband Sam Esmail was born the day prior). Emmy threw in another surprise in her birth announcement: a series of maternity photos, which you can see here and here.

Celebrities flooded Emmy’s comments section with their congratulations. “Congrats!!,” fellow new mom Emily Ratajkowski wrote, which Storm Reid echoed by writing, “CONGRATULATIONS” with a heart emoji. Gabrielle Union chimed in to write “Congratulations mama!!,” and Chelsea Handler wrote a similar note: “I love it! Congratulations, mama!”
Emmy Rossum and Sam Esmail, pictured here at the final season premiere for Mr. Robot in Oct. 2019, tied the knot in May of 2017. Sam is the creator of Mr. Robot. Sam hopped in for one of the photos, and sweetly cradled Emmy’s baby bump for the camera. Emmy also shared a photo of their baby girl’s footprint!
Emmy stayed hush about the pregnancy throughout all three trimesters. Beginning at the end of Oct. 2020, she would only share close-up selfies of her face on Instagram. She made headlines in April of 2021, however, for not returning as her famous character Fiona for the Shameless series finale. Although Emmy left the Showtime drama two seasons prior, fans were still sad to not see a cameo from the actress. Showrunner John Wells blamed Emmy’s lack of a cameo on the pandemic, after they both had “a lot of conversations” about a potential comeback.

“She’s been in New York with [husband] Sam, where they live, and right about the time where we were talking about putting it all together was when the additional lockdowns kind of hit again, and it just didn’t feel safe or practical for her to come back,” John told EW in April. He added, “So I think it’s with a great deal of regret that we couldn’t do it but it’s just more minor casualty of our year of COVID.”
Emmy and Sam started dating in 2013, and they were engaged by 2015. The couple proceeded to marry amid a gorgeous ceremony in the Central Synagogue in New York City in May of 2017! Before the arrival of their first child together, the married couple worked together on another baby: a limited TV series about billboard star Angelyne.
