Why Lily Collins Skipped the Oscars in 2021

Emily in Paris and Mank star Lily Collins opted not to attend the Oscars this evening in Los Angeles. Collins’ absence doesn’t come as a huge surprise, given the show’s reduced audience and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Collins doesn’t have any individual nominations tonight and isn’t a presenter at the ceremony, either. But her film Mank has 10 nods, including Best Picture (which is a cast award), Best Actor (Gary Oldman), and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried).

Emily in Paris wasn’t eligible for any Oscars, as the Academy Awards focuses on film and does not have categories for television. The hit Netflix show was renewed for a second season, but its release date (and filming date) have not yet been revealed.

Collins spoke with Deadline in February about her hopes for her character Emily’s love life. “I don’t know what they’re writing right now, but I think it would be a little early for Emily to lock something in,” she said of Emily’s potential love interests. “I think she’s still exploring the prospects. Honestly I think Emily doesn’t even know [what will happen], and that’s the beauty of the way that they write the show. She has yet to find all the qualities she maybe is looking for. But that being said, there is that connection with Gabriel [played by Lucas Bravo], but now she has Camille in that love triangle, so I think there’s still experiences to be had, adventure to be had and she’s still finding herself.”

She also hinted the show may be shooting this spring. “We’re aiming to hopefully be going back soon. Hopefully in spring time,” she said. “We’re trying to move forward. Again everything is COVID pending. When we got confirmed for season 2 it made us all even more excited and even more anxious to get back. Of course there are so many regulations right now and we want to be safe, but we want to get back.”
