Timothée Chalamet kicked off summer 2020 with what appears to be the first surprise romance of the season. The 24-year-old actor was photographed kissing 30-year-old actress Eiza González in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. While the two haven’t officially confirmed they’re dating, the photos were enough to spark speculation they’ve quietly been together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
So who is González? Here, what to know about Chalamet’s possible new partner.
Eiza González is a Mexican-born actress who’s been working steadily since 2007.
González starred in Baby Driver, Alita: Battle Angel, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw among many other films. She started her career starring as Dolores “Lola” Valente in Mexican musical telenovela Lola: Érase una vez.
She has spoken about her experience auditioning in the U.S. and being typecast because of her looks. “I’m a perfectionist, which is bad at times but very good at other times,” she told Interview in 2017. “It was one of the first auditions I got in the U.S., and it’s a different format than to Mexico. In Mexico, it’s always a chemistry read; you always read with another actor and it’s usually on a set. Here, you read with a casting director while they’re taping and some of them just read blankly. I was given four scenes, and I thought I was meant to choose one, because that’s how it is in Mexico. But the casting director stopped everything. She was pretty mean. She said, ‘You’re probably going to work just because you’re pretty.’ I was like, ‘What does that even mean?’ I was so upset, and I made a mental note that I never wanted to hear that again. I was like, ‘I’m going to show you.'”
González speaks multiple languages, including Spanish, English, Italian, and a little French.
“I speak Italian and a little bit of French,” she told Interview in 2017. “I moved to Trento, Italy, when I was around 10 to learn Italian. I have family there. I’m trying to restart my French. And then I want to get into Mandarin.”
González lost her father at a young age and it deeply impacted how she views life and family.
González lost her father at a young age. She has spoken in multiple interviews about how that affected her.
To Latina, she said in 2017, “I lost my father very young, but not young enough to not be aware of what was going on. My father and I had an amazing relationship. We were very close. I fell into a very dark place and I couldn’t deal with [the] loss. I started eating excessively and gained a lot of weight, and I was very sad. I wasn’t in a good place. I wouldn’t say I had an eating disorder, I would say I was going through depression.””
She told Interview that same year, regarding the way it affected her, “I’ve lost people at a really young age, so I embrace growing [old]: being able to see your children and your grandchildren, your successes and your failures. Building your personality and building your persona. Falling 80,000 more times and standing up. Whenever I’ve fallen, I’ve stood up stronger and more humble. I want to walk out of the, ‘me, me, me’ age, which is this one, and focus on a third person—a child or a partner.”
In a 2020 interview with HOLA!, González spoke about how persevering through that and other tragedies in her life shaped her. “I think my superpower is my emotional strength,” she said. “I’ve endured really crazy stuff, and I’ve navigated it the best way possible. I think that being able to fall and pick yourself back up again, start fresh with no trauma or no holding back is something that is really hard to do.”
González has 5.8 million followers on Instagram.
González has been a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. She has shared videos from protests in the last few weeks:

She has also shared her own personal vacation photos. Chalamet isn’t in any on her Instagram yet:

González has spoken about the discrepancy between her public image and her actual personality. “Oh yeah, I feel like an outsider all the time,” she told HOLA! earlier this year. “Actors always have this social anxiety where it’s a weird complex. I always feel like there’s this conception of me publicly, of who I am that doesn’t resonate with who I am at all. But at the same time, I always feel like I don’t have to explain [myself].”
González made headlines for kissing Liam Hemsworth one day after his 2013 split with Miley Cyrus was announced.
Hemsworth and González were photographed kissing in Vegas just hours after news broke that Cyrus and Hemsworth had called off their first engagement and split. A source told E! that she and Hemsworth “just met. They were there separately. She was there with some friends.”
González addressed the Hemsworth rumors years later, telling Latina simply “I would never talk about that. I focus on my work, that’s what really matters.”
Don’t expect González to talk about her romance with Chalamet: The actress said she’s keeping her private life private.
“I don’t think that it’s necessary [to share details about my private life],” González told Latina. “I think that your life as public person is already so exposed. I’m being linked to people because it’s my environment. It’s like your school. We know each other. It’s people I surround myself with. I don’t know why it’s such a big thing.”
González is an Aquarius.
The actress celebrated her golden 30th birthday on January 30. (Chalamet, by the way, is a Capricorn—an interesting astrological pairing.)
