What August Alsina’s Entanglements Lyrics Might Mean

On Saturday night, August Alsina dropped a new song with Rick Ross called “Entanglements.” If it seems as if you’ve heard that word a lot lately, you’re right. In fact, as recently as Friday, Vulture published an interview with Alsina in which he addressed the word that Jada Pinkett Smith used in her Red Table Talk interview with Will Smith.

“I don’t know why that word is such an issue,” he said. “I would agree [with Jada]. If you look up the definition of ‘entanglement,’ it is a complex and difficult relationship. It was exactly that. I think it’s just the language that probably stuck out to people. But I definitely have to agree with it being an entanglement. It definitely was something complicated, a complicated dynamic.”

The lyrics in “Entanglements” seem to address the relationship he had with Pinkett Smith about four years ago. They are:

“The definition of entanglement (No, oh-woah, oh, oh)It’s when you’re tangled in the sheets (Yeah, yeah)Girl I know that we don’t call it a relationship (No, oh, oh)But you’re still fuckin’ with me (Oh), yeah (Yeah)Entanglements, is when you tangled in them sheetsEntanglements, is when you’re tangled up with meEntanglements (The number one’s here, it’s the Biggest), is when you’re gettin’ in too deepTangled up with me (Huh), tang—, tangled in them sheets (Yes)

The lyric “Girl I know we don’t call it a relationship,” seems to directly reference Alsina’s agreement that what he and Pinkett Smith had was more of an “entanglement” than it was a relationship.

This particular section seems to reference the dynamics the two might have had: “Shawty leanin’ on my shoulder, got her questionin’ my willpower/Jaded by her beauty, but her reputation real solid.”

In the weeks following Alsina’s interview with The Breakfast Club’s Angela Yee, both Alsina and Jada Pinkett Smith have commented on Alsina’s comment that he got Smith’s “blessing” to date his wife.

“One thing I want clean up that was swirling about in the press is about you giving permission…the only person that can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself,” Pinkett Smith said on Red Table Talk.

In his Vulture interview, Alsina countered: “I can’t speak for anyone else,” he said. “What I said in my interview, how I said it, when I said it, is exactly what I said and exactly what I meant. That’s all I can really say about that. All I have is my truth, and all I have is my truth to stand on it. I don’t have any reason to lie about anything.”
