Taylor Swift took a moment on stage at the Grammys to accept her award for Album of the Year—and for the first time at an awards show, she gave her boyfriend of over four years, Joe Alwyn, a very direct shoutout. She also thanked Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, plus their children Betty, Inez, and James.
It was a brief speech—less than a minute long. But it marked a very public moment in Swift and Alwyn’s otherwise very private relationship along with her friendships with Lively and Reynolds. (Swift was given permission to reveal the name of their third child, daughter Betty, in her folklore song “betty.”)
“Joe, who is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine,” she said to her boyfriend. (Alwyn wrote songs for folklore under the pseudonym William Bowery.) “I want to thank—I want to thank James, Inez, and Betty and their parents [Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds] who are the second and third people that I play every new song that I write but mostly, we just want to thank the fans. You guys met us in this imaginary world that we created, and we can’t tell you how honored we are forever by this. Thank you so much, and thank you to the Recording Academy. We will never forget that you did this for us. Thank you so much.”

Swift made her 2020 album folklore entirely in quarantine with her collaborators The National’s Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. Her second quarantine album, evermore, will be eligible for next year’s Grammys as it was released after this year’s window.
