Prince Harry says he’s “committed to being part of the solution” when it comes to dismantling institutional racism in the world. As part of his remarks during the virtual Diana Awards ceremony on what would’ve been Princess Diana’s 59th birthday, Harry became the first House of Windsor heir to openly acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement. His speech comes almost a month after his wife, Meghan Markle, gave a powerful commencement address about the worldwide protests at her high school alma mater.
“My wife said recently that our generation and the ones before us haven’t done enough to right the wrongs of the past,” Harry stated, acknowledging he and Meghan’s recent discussions regarding race. “I too am sorry—sorry that we haven’t got the world to a place you deserve it to be. Institutional racism has no place in our societies, yet it is still endemic. Unconscious bias must be acknowledged without blame to create a better world for all of you.”

“Right now, we’re seeing situations around the world where division, isolation and anger are dominating as pain and trauma come to the surface,” Harry began his remarks. “But I see the greatest hope in people like you and I’m confident about the world’s future and its ability to heal because it is in your hands.”
He went on to commend the Diana Awards honorees for keeping his mother’s legacy alive through their activism. “I know that my mother has been an inspiration to many of you, and I can assure you she would have been fighting your corner. Like many of you she didn’t take the easy route or the popular one or the comfortable one. But she stood for something and she stood up for people who needed it,” he continued. Harry himself vowed to be “part of the change that you are all leading. Now is the time, and we know that you can do it.”

Meghan and Harry are keeping their passion for activism alive during quarantine. The pair is working to launch their non-profit Archewell later this year while raising their 1-year-old son Archie. In June, Omid Scobie reported for Harper’s Bazaar that the couple had been “quietly having meetings behind the scenes with people on all levels to make sure they are educated and connected to the issues of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.” That same week, Meghan gave her address to the students of Los Angeles high school, Immaculate Heart, where she encouraged them to “rebuild” following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others.
In June, the Sussexes made a visit to Los Angeles social justice organization Homeboy Industries, which provides support for those formerly incarcerated or involved with gangs. In April, local publication WEHOville reported that the couple delivered meals to those impacted by COVID-19 in West Hollywood alongside Project Angel Food. Friends of Meghan and Harry told ELLE.com in May that quarantine has mainly been a “happy and love-filled time” for them and Archie as a family.
