Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Rep Responds to Trump’s Tweet About Security

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump took a moment to tweet from his personal account about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s move to Los Angeles and how the U.S. would absolutely not pay for their security. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry deigned to give him a reply through their rep—to do rumor debunking more than anything else. The couple confirmed that yes, they did move to the U.S., and don’t worry, tabloids, they’re handling their own security costs.

Trump tweeted, “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”

A rep for the couple said, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have no plans to ask the U.S. government for security resources. Privately funded security arrangements have been made.”

Meghan and Harry’s team wrote on their spring transition information site that the royal family agreed that the couple would still require security given their roles and visibility. But any details beyond that would remain private. “It is agreed that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to require effective security to protect them and their son,” the team wrote. “This is based on The Duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into The Royal Family, his military service, the Duchess’ own independent profile, and the shared threat and risk level documented specifically over the last few years. No further details can be shared as this is classified information for safety reasons.”
