Before Archie’s birth in May 2019, Meghan Markle celebrated his impending arrival with a lavish New York City baby shower thrown by her friend Serena Williams. But things are much different in 2021, ahead of the summer birth of Meghan and Harry’s second child, their first baby girl. Us Weekly reports that—not surprisingly, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic—Meghan has opted not to have a big baby shower for baby #2.
A source explained her reasoning to the outlet, saying it stemmed from more than just safety concerns during COVID-19. “Meghan doesn’t feel a big baby shower with gifts is appropriate right now,” the source said. “There is too much strife in the world. She and Harry have been so involved with humanitarian issues, they both feel their time and resources can be used for a better purpose.”
Meghan isn’t at a loss at all either, the source added: The Duchess “has the support of her friends and, most importantly, [Prince Harry]. Harry is the ideal partner, taking care of Archie and working to provide for his family.”
Meghan referenced her daughter in her Vax Live speech about COVID vaccine and gender equity. (The Duchess and her husband co-chaired the event.)
“My husband and I are thrilled to soon be welcoming a daughter,” she said toward the end of her remarks. “It’s a feeling of joy we share with millions of other families around the world. When we think of her, we think of all the other families around the globe who must be given the ability and support to lead us forward. Their future leadership depends on the decisions we make and the actions we take now to set them up and to set all of us up for a successful, equitable, and compassionate tomorrow.” You can watch her speech below:

“Women, and especially women of colour, have seen a generation of economic gain wiped out. Since the pandemic began, nearly 5.5million women have lost work in the US, and 47million more women around the world are expected to slip into extreme poverty.”—Duchess Meghan, #VaxLive pic.twitter.com/EU7QENYxYr
