Over the last 24 hours, more details have come out about how Glee actress Naya Rivera was doing before she disappeared while boating with her four-year-old son Josey Dorsey at Lake Piru. A recovery mission is still underway, and Rivera is now presumed dead by officials after they were unable to find her Wednesday and Thursday. Her son was initially found alone on the pontoon boat they had rented to go swimming; he has since been reunited with his father, Rivera’s ex-husband Ryan Dorsey.
E! and People got insight from sources on what Rivera’s life was like before the tragic incident. People’s source had caught up with Rivera just a few weeks ago. “She seemed happy, busy…just kind of living life,” the source said.
That source added that her son was her focus. “Back in the day, her life was all about her career,” the source started. “It was all about acting, singing, using her platform for equal rights, empowerment, anti-bullying—I think her priorities have shifted. Her working less isn’t because she doesn’t want to work, but she’s a mom. Her son comes first. That’s apparent in everything she’s posted and done. Everything is about her son.”
E!’s source echoed the same points as People’s. Rivera, a source close to her told the outlet, was “in a really good place. Probably the best I’ve ever seen her. She finally had a great co-parenting system worked out, and she seemed genuinely really happy. She was excited for new beginnings this year.”
Rivera and her son “were incredibly close and had a very tight bond,” the source added. The boating trip wasn’t surprising, as “they were always going on fun adventures together. She loved to take Josey places and explore with him. They were always doing something fun and loved to be outdoors.”
The source explained that Josey has a loving grandmother and father who will take care of him now, but the family is understandably concerned for him: “Josey will definitely be looked after by his grandma, who was also extremely close to him, and Ryan, but the family is very worried about Josey’s wellbeing,” the source said. “It’s all very tragic and the family is heartbroken and devastated.”
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Donoghue said during a press conference yesterday that officials “don’t know” if they will ever find Rivera or her body. “If the body is entangled in something underneath the water it may never come up,” he said.
Donoghue told People that there’s no evidence that Rivera made it to shore so far, so their primary focus is searching the water. “She could have suffered a medical episode. We just don’t know. We won’t know until we find her,” Donoghue said.
“We have detectives who are investigating that aspect as well—checking her credit card statements making sure there are no charges anywhere,” he added. “But based on the information we have so far, we are fairly confident the focus of our search being in the water. We want to bring closure for the family, so we really are putting our best effort forward.”
