Chris Hemsworth, Liam’s older brother, subtly acknowledged the aftermath of Liam’s breakup from Miley Cyrus in a new interview with News.com.au. His remark didn’t explicitly call Cyrus out, but it did contain a not-so-veiled reference to her.
Chris had been speaking about Liam’s Men’s Health cover and how his little brother had become the fitter Hemsworth. “I think he’s done it,” Chris said. “Did you see the Men’s Health cover? I thought, ‘Not bad kid. Not bad’. He’s out there training and staying fit, and back in Australia doing his thing. It’s Australian living, I guess. We got him out of Malibu!” Chris added with a laugh.
News.com.au noted that Malibu is where Liam and Miley lived together. Miley released a song called “Malibu” about her and Liam’s reconciled romance in 2017. “They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam,” she told Billboard of why she wrote it about her then-fiancé at the time. “So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”
Miley and Liam’s Malibu home burned down during the Woolsey Fire in 2018. Miley explained to Vanity Fair in February 2019 that it was what sparked them to wed at the end of that year after dating on-off for nearly a decade. “What Liam and I went through together changed us,” she said. “I’m not sure without losing Malibu, we would’ve been ready to take this step or ever even gotten married, who can say? But the timing felt right and I go with my heart. No one is promised the next day, or the next, so I try to be ‘in the now’ as much as possible.”
Miley and Liam announced their separation less than a year later in August 2019. Miley explained on Twitter that the two had just grown apart: “Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will,” she wrote. “BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time.”
Their divorce was finalized in late January 2020.
Chris’s wife Elsa Pataky was the first Hemsworth to really address the couple’s split and make an overtly shady remark about Miley in an interview. She told Hola! in November 2019 that “my brother-in-law, well… After a relationship that you’ve dedicated ten years to, he’s a little bit down, but he’s coping well, he’s a strong boy and he deserves the best, I think he deserves much better,” she said. “You always find support in your family, and he’s joined at the hip with his brother, who has been there to give all the strength he needed.”
Miley and Liam have both moved on since their split. Miley has been dating Australian singer Cody Simpson for the last six months, while Liam has been dating Australian model Gabriella Brooks for the last few months.
