America Ferrera has won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a SAG award among other accolades, yet if she were to travel back in time and have a chat with herself about being named a CoverGirl ambassador last November, she says that realization would have blown her younger self’s mind.

“I would have thought, ‘Oh, you mean I’m going to grow up to be a skinny blonde, white girl?’ not ‘Oh, you mean the cultural narrative and the conversation around beauty and beauty standards is going to grow and shift and expand to include people like me,’” she laughs.
Ferrera, the daughter of Honduran immigrants, is now the face of CoverGirl’s Clean Fresh Skincare collection. “It makes me emotional to think that new kinds of images are going to be seen by generations of women who will come to expect that they are visible in the narrative and the culture,” she says.
Her campaign for the collection debuts today, and she says being surrounded by a team of Latinas made the experience incredibly special. Shot by Argentinian photographer, Paola Kudaki, Ferrera talks about being so in sync during the process. She attributes the unique energy at the shoot to the similarities between their identities.
