Fans are so excited for more of The Witcher. HollywoodLife has rounded up everything we know so far about season 3 of The Witcher, including the release date, the cast and crew, and more.

When Will The Witcher Season 3 Come Out?

The Witcher season 3 will premiere June 29 on Netflix. Similar to You and Stranger Things, The Witcher season 3 will be split into two parts. Volume 1, which will include the first 5 episodes, will premiere June 29. Volume 2, consisting of the final 3 episodes, will drop on July 27.

Netflix officially announced season 3 back in September 2021, but pre-production didn’t begin until January 2022, according to Redanian Intelligence.  Season 2 filming was interrupted several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Henry’s on-set injury.

The Witcher Season 3 Cast

The Witcher season 3 will continue the story of Geralt of Rivia, with Henry Cavill taking his final bow as the character. In October 2022, Netflix announced that Liam Hemsworth would be taking over for Henry as Geralt in season 4.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4,” Henry said in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Liam released his own statement as well: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Season 3 will also feature Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Myanna Buring as Tissaia, Eamon Farren as Cahir, Mimî M Khayisa as Fringilla, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Mecia Simson as Francesca, Tom Canton as Filavandrel, Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz, Graham McTavish as Dijsktra, Cassie Clare as Philippa, and Hugh Skinner as Radovid.

What Will The Witcher Season 3 Be About?

The official synopsis for season 3 reads: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”

Season 2 ended with the shocking reveal that Ciri’s father Duny is actually the White Flame, the current emperor of Nilfgaard. The father-daughter dynamic will definitely be explored in season 3. Plus, Yennefer, Geralt, and Ciri’s adventure to Aretuza will continue, as they try to teach Ciri to control her magic powers.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Witcher were based on the events of the first three books by Polish writer Andrea Sapkowski: The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, and Blood of Elves. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich previously teased to Collider that season 3 will mostly take source material from both Blood of Elves and the fourth book, The Time of Contempt.

“We approximately do a book a season, but we also make sure that the stories from that book are best in that season of our television show,” she told the outlet in Dec. 2021. “So sometimes we move those chess pieces around a little bit. There’s a big story from Blood of Elves that we’re gonna do in Season 3 for instance.” Lauren also said that she’s “really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt.”
