How Meghan Markle Participated in Prince Philip’s Funeral from California

Meghan Markle may not be able to be at Prince Philip’s funeral in-person this afternoon in England because she was not cleared to fly so late into her pregnancy, but the Duchess of Sussex very much participated in the day from California.

A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex told Harper’s Bazaar that Meghan watched Philip’s funeral from her and Harry’s California home. The funeral started at 2:30 PM London time, so 6:30 AM California time, meaning the Duchess likely woke up early to view the service.

Meghan and Harry additionally sent a wreath with a handwritten note from Meghan to honor the late Duke of Edinburgh. The wreath was designed by florist Willow Crossley, according to Harper’s Bazaar—a florist who has history with the couple. Crossley did floral arrangements for the couple’s evening wedding reception and their son Archie’s christening.

The flowers chosen in the wreath are symbolic choices by Meghan and Harry to pay tribute to Philip’s life. As Harper’s Bazaar wrote, “it includes bear’s breeches, which are the national flower of Greece, to represent Prince Philip’s heritage, as well as sea holly, which represent the late prince’s service in the Royal Marines. Other symbolic flowers featured are campanula for gratitude and everlasting love, rosemary for remembrance, lavender for devotion, and roses in honor of Prince Philip’s birth month.”

Harry released a statement earlier this week that touched on Philip’s impact on his, Meghan’s, Archie’s, and their unborn daughter’s lives. (The couple’s daughter is due this summer.)

Harry wrote:

My grandfather was a man of service, honour, and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm—and also because you never knew what he might say next.He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.He has been a rock for Her Majesty the Queen with unparalleled devotion, by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, “Oh do get on with it!”So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself. You will be sorely missed, but always remembered—by the nation and the world. Meghan, Archie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always hold a special place for you in our hearts.“Per Mare, Per Terram.” (“By sea, by land,” the motto of the Royal Marines.)
