Britney Spears Breaks Silence on ‘Framing Britney’ Documentary

Britney Spears has broken her silence about the New York Times’ Framing Britney documentary, which explored the cruel, sexist ways the public treated Spears from the moment she emerged in the spotlight.

Spears posted on her Instagram about the documentary last night, writing that she didn’t see all of it, but what she did greatly upset her. “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in,” she wrote. “I cried for two weeks and well …. I still cry sometimes !!!!”

Spears shared the caption with a video of her dancing, which honestly, is a very Britney Spears Instagram move. Here, Spears’ full comments on Framing Britney:

My life has always been very speculated … watched … and judged really my whole life !!! For my sanity I need to dance to @iamstevent every night of my life 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼 to feel wild and human and alive !!! I have been exposed my whole life performing in front of people 😳😳😳 !!! It takes a lot of strength to TRUST the universe with your real vulnerability cause I’ve always been so judged… insulted… and embarrassed by the media… and I still am till this day 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼 !!!! As the world keeps on turning and life goes on we still remain so fragile and sensitive as people !!! I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in … I cried for two weeks and well …. I still cry sometimes !!!! I do what I can in my own spirituality with myself to try and keep my own joy … love … and happiness ✨🙏🏼 ☀️ !!!! Every day dancing brings me joy !!! I’m not here to be perfect … perfect is boring … I’m here to pass on kindness 💋💋💋 !!!!

Framing Britney prompted a bigger discussion culturally on how the media treated celebrity women in the ’00s and now. It also caused Spears’ ex Justin Timberlake, who used their breakup to bolster his early solo career, to apologize for the first time about the way he treated her and portrayed her as a cheater over 15 years ago.

It’s worth noting Spears remains in a conservatorship (where her personal and financial decisions are made by others) that her father still partly controls. Spears is trying to have her father removed as a conservator in court.

Spears’ social media manager Cassie Petrey spoke out in February about how much editorial control Spears has over her Instagram.

Petrey wrote on Instagram: “Britney creates her own posts and writes her own captions for Instagram. She finds the google images, pinterest images, quotes, memes, and everything else herself. Nobody is suggesting any of that stuff to her. She generally edits the videos herself. If a video she sends in is edited by her social media team, it’s because she gave specific instructions and asked for it to be edited that way. Then she sees it and decides if she wants to post it or not.”

She continued: “She has stated many times that she creates the posts, but people continue to believe conspiracy theories over what Britney says over and over again. Britney is not ‘asking for help’ or leaving secret messages in her social media. She is literally just living life and trying to have fun on instagram. She has a team to help strategize, like any major celebrity generally does at this point in her career. Almost every person has a social media team—just like they have a manager, publicist, record label, etc.”

Petrey added, “My work on Britney’s social media does not involve her conservatorship in any way. That’s a court and lawyer thing. Since when do digital marketing people have anything to do with things that courts and lawyers handle?”
