One morning not long ago, I resolved to utilize artificial intelligence on a pressing concern: my e-mail repository. Over the last two decades, the electronic address I employ for writing assignments has been found by an overwhelming number of public-relations agencies, fraudsters, and unknown individuals with peculiar requests. Is there a likelihood his startup will appeal to me—the kind of endeavor I’ll be pleased to have helped shape? Should I decide to meet him, when and where should I propose? If John’s sibling holds a higher position than I do—perhaps he’s a renowned entrepreneur—I may need to defer to his occupied schedule, but if he’s a younger individual seeking guidance, he can accommodate mine.
Ultimately, the response I send back may comprise only a few terms, but it will represent the consequence of a refined sequence of rapid appraisals and judgments. This singular activity debatably integrates many of the cognitive proficiencies—filtering, interpreting, strategizing, analysis—mandated to flourish in virtually any form of knowledge labor.
The morning following my activation of Cora, I signed into my Gmail account with some apprehension. Conventionally, I might observe a disordered mixture of thirty or forty communications, but now I discerned only five requiring my consideration, one of which was Cora’s summary. Despite how banal the instant may appear, I’m uncertain that A.I. has ever excited me more than I was then.
The briefing disclosed that the application had archived twenty-nine e-mails on my behalf, and its determinations seemed quite sound—a swift perusal indicated that all but two were certainly removable. What Cora didn’t endeavor to confront were the tier-three messages that necessitated more involved contemplation and action. As a test, I dispatched the John Doe e-mail to myself from a separate address; Cora left it untouched in my inbox for me to address. Indeed, none of the other A.I.-driven e-mail instruments I examined, encompassing Superhuman, Microsoft Copilot for Outlook, and SaneBox, attempt to respond to these categories of non-trivial e-mails. One presumes that they’re not sufficiently proximate to prevailing in the inbox game to risk attempting.

Within a 1966 book, “The Tacit Dimension,” the polymath Michael Polanyi contended that our judgments in life and labor rely heavily on unstated context and implicit assumptions, which are distinctive to our individual experiences. What Polanyi famously designated “tacit knowledge” is more subtle and arduous to articulate than we comprehend. “I shall reconsider human knowledge by starting from the fact that we can know more than we can tell,” he penned. This is precisely why current A.I.-driven e-mail tools cannot reliably respond to all of our communications. Even though language models are remarkably knowledgeable concerning numerous facets, they’re ignorant of the vast quantities of tacit knowledge interwoven into our lives and offices—preventing any commercial model from dependably discerning whether to affirm that coffee invitation. It’s immaterial how intelligent we render our machines if we cannot delineate to them precisely what we desire.
It’s not necessarily unfavorable news that A.I. instruments are improbable to automate e-mail anytime imminently.
