Zendaya Wears Vintage Yves Saint Laurent to Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards

Zendaya will be a presenter at this Sunday’s in-person Oscars ceremony, but ahead of that big fashion moment, Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach served up another reminder of just how great her awards season fashion is. Zendaya attended Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood awards, and Roach dressed Zendaya in a vintage Yves Saint Laurent piece from his personal archive. The outfit dates to 1982.

“I’ve been waiting to share this look….. @zendaya wearing vintage @ysl Haute Couture from 1982 (my personal archive) originally owned by the trailblazer Eunice Johnson! We pay homage 🌹🌹🌹” he captioned the Instagram, featuring shots of Zendaya in the look.

Roach spoke to ELLE.com earlier this year about how dressing Zendaya the person differs from dressing her Malcom & Marie character. (He created the iconic dress Zendaya wears in the film.)

“I think there are some similarities,” he said. “It’s still Zendaya’s body. It’s still Zendaya’s physicality, which is beautiful. When we do things together, we always create a narrative or a character. There has to be a story behind why the clothes are chosen. Who is she at that moment? It’s always been my job to create that narrative, to bring the pieces to the story. Then she takes them and becomes whoever it is and evokes whatever emotion we decided on. I put that into designing for Marie, too.”
