Don’t expect any big, brotherly show of peace between Prince Harry and Prince William at Prince Philip’s televised funeral. The Palace announced today the procession lineup for Philip’s funeral proceedings on Saturday. Surprisingly, William and Harry will not be walking next to each other, according to People.
In the first procession, Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips will walk between Harry and William. In the second procession into the church, William will walk with Peter, and Harry will walk behind them, alongside David Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret’s son.
A Palace spokesman told People that this procession order was not designed to send any sort of message about the brothers’ strained relationship. The order was “a practical change rather than sending a signal. This is a funeral, and we are not going to be drawn into perceptions of drama. The arrangements have been agreed and represent Her Majesty’s wishes,” the spokesperson said.
It’s unclear exactly how much contact William and Harry have had while Harry has been in the U.K. Entertainment Tonight was told by a source yesterday that the two had spoken by phone. A second source added that they aren’t expected to reunite face-to-face until the funeral on Saturday.
Gayle King revealed last month that after Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview aired, the couple told her that Harry did talk to William and their father Prince Charles.
“It’s true, Harry has talked to his brother and he has talked to his father, too,” King said. “The word I was given was, those conversations were not productive. But they are glad they at least started a conversation.
“I think what is still upsetting to them is that the Palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately but yet they release these false stories that are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still,” King continued. “No one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet or at this particular time. And I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant. And until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward. But they both want to move forward with this. They want healing in this family. At the end of the day, it’s Harry’s family.”
