Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Aren’t at the Emmy Awards in 2021

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s big Oprah interview is Emmy-nominated tonight for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opted not to attend the award ceremony tonight. The California-based couple was not on the red carpet. This isn’t too surprising given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Meghan and Harry being just the subjects of the interview rather than Oprah or the production team behind it, and the more minor category in which the special was nominated.

Meghan and Harry have been spending their summer on parental leave following the birth of their second child Lilibet “Lili” Diana in June. Harry spoke a little about Lili and their oldest son Archie’s personalities at the end of June whiile at the WellChild Awards in London. He told a guest, via Hello!, that Lili has a calm temperament. “We’ve been lucky so far, she’s very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy.”

Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview—and their bombshell confessions about the racism, lack of regard for mental health, and more they faced while serving as working senior royals—created global headlines and led to the royal family release a brief statement addressing the claims.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen two days after the interview aired in March, which read, “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Meghan and Harry. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
