The actor even had a joint audition with Kate Winslet.
Matthew McConaughey had every chance of getting the lead role in the movie “Titanic,” but was rejected because of one sentence. This is reported by Vanity Fair, citing the yet-to-be-published memoirs of Jon Landau, a producer who often worked on films directed by James Cameron.
Matthew McConaughey is originally from Texas. During the audition for the role of Jack Dawson, the actor did not change his accent, although his character is from Wisconsin. The director liked this interpretation, but he asked to repeat the scene again, but a little differently. “No. That was pretty good. Thank you,” Matthew McConaughey refused at the time. Because of this phrase, the actor lost the role.
“…for McConaughey, that was the end of it,” notes Jon Landau.

The actor has mentioned the lead role in Titanic before. Four years ago, on the podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe, Matthew McConaughey shared that he was sure he would star in the film. Then the actor had a screen audition with Kate Winslet, and after the auditions were over, he heard back that his performance was great.
However, Jack Dawson was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film.

As a reminder, we wrote that Matthew McConaughey played the lead role in the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King. This is his first acting project after a six-year hiatus.
