Kelly Clarkson’s surprise divorce from her husband of nearly seven years, Brandon Blackstock, happened because of what she realized about their relationship while quarantining with him in Montana, Entertainment Tonight reports. A source spoke to the outlet about why Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock last week. Blackstock and Clarkson have two children together. He’s also her manager.
“Kelly and Brandon had been having problems for several months and were making a conscious effort to work things out,” the source said. “They both hoped quarantining away from LA in Montana would help them work things out in their marriage, but instead the change in environment was actually detrimental.”
“The constant time together seemed to make an already challenging situation worse,” the source added. Clarkson’s booming career “definitely helped to keep her mind off things, but this recent downtime gave her the time she needed to think about her life and her marriage.”
The source said that both Blackstock and Clarkson had been “dreading” the divorce process that she began a few weeks ago. But Clarkson “knew she just needed to follow her heart and finally realized divorce was her only option.”
Entertainment Tonight reports that Clarkson had a premartial agreement in place, which she requested the court to enforce. She requested joint physical and legal custody of their two kids.
A source spoke to Entertainment Tonight about Clarkson’s prenup. “[Kelly] has always been a very organized businesswoman, so her decision to have a prenup just reflects that and protects her earnings,” the source said. “Kelly is very kindhearted, generous and giving, so Brandon will be just fine.”
