In a short snippet of the music video for Justin Bieber’s new song “Holy” released earlier this week, the camera pans over Bieber lying down in bed as the sun wakes him and slowly reveals he has some company. When the camera gets closer to the mystery woman, it turns out to be none other than actress-slash-singer-slash-everything Ryan Destiny, who flashes an innocent smile at The Biebs. Naturally, JB waking up next to woman that isn’t his wife Hailey Bieber was sure to stir up some talk, and resulted in Destiny’s name soaring to the top of Twitter’s trending box with fans asking for the 411 on JB’s beautiful love interest.

She cut her teeth as a singer in a girl group called Love Dollhouse.
Destiny, 25, previously auditioned for America’s Got Talent but decided not to go through with it. Her first bout with fame came in 2014 when she and her friends/former AGT contestants formed the Detroit-based trio Love Dollhouse and signed to All Def Digital. “Every 10-15 years there’s a girl group—you can start with En Vogue and then you go to TLC and then you go to Destiny’s Child, [Dollhouse is] that next one,” music executive Steve Rifkind said in the 2014 video. However, a year later, Love Dollhouse disbanded.
She’s an actress best known for her role in Fox’s musical drama Star.
While Destiny appeared in AMC’s crime series Low Winter Sun in 2013 and starred in the Meagan Good-helmed film A Girl Like Grace alongside Good, Raven-Symoné, and Garcelle Beauvais, it wasn’t until 2016 that she’d get her big break. Destiny joined the cast of Lee Daniels’ Star, a musical drama centered on three talented singers whose troubling lives try to deter them away from pursuing their dreams. Destiny played Alex Jones, the best friend to lead character Star (Jude Demorest) and one-third of the singers in Take 3 until the show ended in May 2019.

She recently joined the Grown-ish cast.
Destiny joined the third season of Grown-ish in 2019 as Jillian, a former HBCU student who transferred California University, where Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) is currently enrolled, to study filmmaking. When Jillian arrives at Cal U, she’s quickly thrown into a love triangle with Zoey and Luca, Zoey’s ex-boyfriend. Zoey and Jillian develop their own friendship despite the circumstances.

She’s in a relationship.
Like her love interest JB, Destiny is currently in a serious relationship as well. She’s been dating actor Keith Powers, known for his role as Ronnie DeVoe in the BET limited series The New Edition Story. The pair met at a Teen Vogue party in 2015 and remained friends until they started flirting via Instagram DM and made things official in 2017. “I had shamefully liked Keith since we met though. We were just friends for a minute. So when we let things naturally happen, if you let it, love falls in naturally too,” she told We The Urban in its July 2019 issue. The couple likes to keep their relationship off social media.

Destiny was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1995, which could explain why fellow Detroit native Big Sean (also a friend of Bieber’s) nabbed the multi-hyphenate for his “Single Again” video in 2019. In the video, Destiny and her IRL boyfriend Powers play a couple who seem to be at odds, judging by Destiny’s character Bianca ignoring Powers’ phone call in the beginning of the visual.

She’s preparing to drop her debut solo EP On One’s Own.
The singer gave us the first preview of her new music with the release of “The Same” in November 2019. In August 2020, Destiny premiered the video for her new song “Do You” on ELLE.com, explaining that the song was inspired by a previous relationship that was slowly dying.
“Honestly, I’ve been in a situation within a relationship where I felt a guy was on his own time and not really taking me or my feelings into consideration and not being upfront with what he wanted from the relationship,” she explains. “It’s me saying, ‘Love me or lose me.’ This is one song where it does feel a bit more vulnerable in that way, I’m just more straight up with my feelings. I say, ‘Do you boo,’ all the time. But it really is me being okay with being by myself. You want to do you? Okay, you can do you. I’ll do me. I’m always going to be good.”
