What Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Secret Dog’s Name Is

Royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s upcoming book Finding Freedom has finally solved a two-year-old Sussex mystery: What on Earth did Meghan Markle and Prince Harry name the black Labrador Retriever puppy they adopted together in August 2018? During an October 2018 event, Meghan even quipped, “And they [the press] keep getting her name wrong!” But she and Harry still haven’t shared the dog’s name officially.

Durand and Scobie discovered it, though, and not only is it unusual, but it’s highly sentimental, according to People. The outlet reports that in the book, the two reporters reveal the dog’s name is Pula—in tribute to Meghan and Harry’s first trip as a couple, where they began to fall in love.

“Pula is the official currency of Botswana, the country in Africa where Harry took Meghan when they first started dating,” People wrote. “Pula means ‘rain’ in Setswana—and since rain is very scarce in Botswana, it’s considered valuable and a blessing.”

In a previously-released excerpt from the book, Scobie and Durand detailed how game-changing that trip was for Meghan and Harry’s relationship.

Harry invited Meghan on the trip six weeks after their first three get-togethers (three straight days of seeing each other, including two dates out and one evening spent talking at Harry’s Kensington Palace home).

A friend told Scobie and Durand that after that trip, “they were each already dancing around the idea that this just may be a for ever thing.”

One friend said that Meghan told them, “I’ve never felt that safe, that close to someone in such a short amount of time,” adding she felt she could talk to Harry about things she couldn’t talk to most people about.
