The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are spending Archie’s first birthday in Los Angeles under lockdown and have released an adorable new photo of the toddler who looks more and more like his father Prince Harry every day and a video of Duchess Meghan reading one of Archie’s favorite books Duck! Rabbit! to him with Prince Harry behind the camera.
The couple, whose friends shared with ELLE.com are enjoying a “happy and love-filled time” with their sweet son as they stay busy with plans for their new non profit Archewell, wanted to mark Archie’s birthday with a nod to two charities who have been at the forefront raising awareness around the urgency of bringing food and learning resources to millions of children impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, @SaveChildrenUK and the @SaveWithStories. Both charities provide much needed support to vulnerable children out of school during this unprecedented time.
The Sussexes have frequently used private moments to make a public impact. They are wholeheartedly committed to using their profile to make a difference, and today is no different. A source close to the couple shared that they are driven by a “hope to create something seriously impactful.” Instead of having the world focus solely on Archie’s first birthday, they’ve once again chosen an issue closest to their hearts, which will benefit from their support.
Meghan, who recently said “having Archie changed my life,” and Harry wanted to draw attention to this vital campaign when so many children have been hardest hit. “Committed to meeting children’s most urgent needs during the global pandemic, Save the Children and No Kid Hungry are providing books, educational materials, and nutritious meals to keep bellies full and children learning,” a spokesman for the couple told ELLE.com.
The U.S. campaign of Save with Stories was created by Jennifer Garner and Amy Adams on March 16, with celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Jimmy Fallon, and Natalie Portman all taking part.
Archie, who is lovingly called “Arch” by his parents, is now teething. With their one-year-old holding onto the furniture and “now starting to walk” in their sun-filled home nearby Elton John’s compound, the Sussexes’ life couldn’t be more fulfilling. A friend of the Duke and Duchess said they are “happier and more relaxed.”
It was just a year ago that Archie was born at 5:26 AM, weighing in at 7lb 3oz. In addition to launching their new nonprofit Archewell, the couple have been busy with their humanitarian work and are focused on their future.
Both the Duke and Duchess have stayed busy, doing Zoom calls with their charities. Harry and Meghan also recently donated their time delivering meals for Project Angel Food after Meghan’s mother Doria alerted them to food insecurity in the area. “If they see a solution they can be involved in, if they can help facilitate, then they’ll do it right then and there,” a source close to the couple said. It’s what drives them in their life and their charitable work.
But it’s family that is most important to the Sussexes. As Harry told a number of those associated with his charity WellChild, while families are struggling coping during the coronavirus pandemic, “there’s a hell of a lot of positives that are happening at the same time and being able to have family time—so much family time—that you almost think, ‘Do I feel guilty for having so much family time?'” Harry said. “You’ve got to celebrate those moments where you are just on the floor rolling around in hysterics.”
