If you’re at all familiar with the timeline of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry’s friendship, then you’ll know that things have not always been smooth sailing for the two artists. “Look What You Made Me Do,” is, in effect, a tale of all of Swift’s feuds, including her storied tension with Perry. These days, though, Perry told Australian magazine Stellar, things aren’t quite as intense between her and Swift, whose music video Perry appeared in last year.
When asked how things are between her and Swift in the year 2020, Perry shared this simple answer with the magazine: “Well, we don’t have a very close relationship because we are very busy, but we text a lot. I was impressed by her documentary [Miss Americana] because I saw some self-awareness starting to happen and I saw a lot of vulnerability.”
In Swift’s video for “You Need to Calm Down,” Perry made a surprise appearance, which seemed to solidify that things are all good between the two.
Things have come a long way since Swift’s song “Bad Blood” on her 2014 album, 1989. Although she declined to name the person about whom she was singing, it was clear to fans that Perry was the subject here.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift told Rolling Stone in September of that year. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'” Then last year, the other star crossed a line. “She did something so horrible,” Swift says. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational—you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
Soon after, this tweet came from Perry:
Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…

A series of other events have happened along this timeline, but as far as Perry is concerned, all the drama is in the past.
“I was really excited for her to be able to show that to the world: that things aren’t perfect, they don’t have to be and it’s more beautiful when they aren’t,” she told Stellar about the ‘You Need to Calm Down’ video. “Even though it was difficult, it was important to make that appearance in the music video because people want people to look up to. We wanted it to be an example of unity. Forgiveness is important. It’s so powerful. If you can forgive your enemy, that’s amazing. As difficult as it is!”
