Meghan Markle and Prince Harry purposely kept a low profile during their U.K. visit this month, but tabloid headlines about their allegedly “rejected” request to take a photo of their daughter Lilibet and Queen Elizabeth II’s first meeting have continued to spread. In reality, as the New York Post reported in early June, Meghan and Harry never asked for photos due to the Queen’s health.
The Daily Mail reported days after the Post’s report that Netflix, the streaming service with which Meghan and Harry have a content deal, was upset that Lili and the Queen didn’t get a photo together.
The sourcing on the story isn’t any Netflix employee or spokesperson, though. Even the Post, which aggregated the Daily Mail’s report, cast skepticism on the source’s expertise, writing, “self-proclaimed royal expert” Angela Levin claimed that she heard Netflix was upset while on GB News.
“I heard Netflix wanted these pictures of them with the royals,” Levin said. “Because they would have sold it. It would be very valuable, very valuable to them.”
The Lilibet photo scandal story originated in The Sun, a tabloid whose parent company Prince Harry sued. An insider claimed to the outlet in early June, “Harry and Meghan wanted their photographer to capture the moment Lilibet met the Queen. But they were told no chance. It was a private family meeting.”
The NY Post actually debunked The Sun’s claim around the same time it was published. The outlet revealed, via a source with knowledge of the situation, that Meghan and Harry didn’t even ask for the Queen to take a photo with Lili given the Queen’s health. (The Queen had to pull out of some Platinum Jubilee events.)
“They just enjoyed a private and intimate visit with the Queen,” the source said, with the outlet writing that the couple “didn’t even bother asking for photos as the Queen wasn’t feeling well.” Lili met the Queen on Thursday and Friday, the Post reported. Lili was named for Queen Elizabeth II’s family nickname.
Meghan and Harry went on to release a new photo of their daughter to mark her first birthday after they returned to California. They celebrated Lili’s first birthday with a party in the U.K.
