Twitter Reacts to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Decision to “Step Back” From Royal Roles

The start of the new year always welcomes reflection and renewal for most people, but Prince Harry and Megan Markle kicked off 2020 by hitting smashing the refresh button. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced today that they will “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent.”

In an official statement released on their joint Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess revealed that in addition to stepping down, they’ll be splitting their time between the United Kingdom and North America “to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

So what does this mean? Well, as of now, their royal titles won’t be going anywhere, and they will “continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, and all relevant parties,” per the statement.

Meghan and Harry Address Qs About Role Decision

While the news comes as a shock, it’s not surprising given the endless harassment Meghan Markle has endured from the media since joining The Royal Family. Prince Harry opened up about Meghan’s experience in a statement last October, writing, “There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behavior, because it destroys people and destroys lives. Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. We all know this isn’t acceptable, at any level. We won’t and can’t believe in a world where there is no accountability for this.”

Of course, the news sent shock waves through Twitter as many people tried to make sense of the announcement and showed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex support. Ahead, the best Twitter reactions to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new chapter.
