Seth Rogen announced the first award of the night at the 2021 Emmy Awards, and immediately called the show out for seemingly not abiding by the COVID health and safety protocols it had promised.
“Let me start by saying, there’s way too many of us in this little room. What are we doing? They said this was outdoors. It’s not,” he said. “They lied to us. We’re in a hermetically-sealed tent right now. I would not have come to this. Why is there a roof? It’s more important that we have three chandeliers than that we make sure we don’t kill Eugene Levy tonight. That is what has been decided.”
He added, “This is insane. I went from wiping my groceries to Paul Bettany sneezing in my face. So, that’s a big week! If anyone’s gonna sneeze in my face, Paul, I want it to be you.”
Seth’s name started trending on Twitter not long after his comments calling out the Emmys, with people assuming everyone was fully spiraling behind-the-scenes.

Seth Rogen starting off the Emmys by addressing the elephant in the room that no one is social distancing or wearing masks and everyone is essentially squeezed inside a giant tent

Last month, the Emmy Awards announced that they’d be moving the show outdoors due to the rise in COVID cases amid the Delta variant. “The Television Academy and CBS have decided to host all ceremonies…on the Event Deck at L.A. LIVE, directly behind the Microsoft Theater,” the Television Academy said in a statement, explaining that the changes took place after discussions with Los Angeles County health and safety experts.
Apparently, the increased precautions also limited the number of attendees, and organizers said, “Unfortunately, this means not all nominees will be able to attend this year’s awards.”
Despite attendees not wearing masks on camera, they were were required to both test negative and be vaccinated ahead of the show, with the TV academy saying, “In addition to proof of full vaccination with either an FDA- or WHO-authorized vaccine, attendees at all four shows will be required to provide proof of a negative RT-PCR COVID test prior to admission to all Emmy ceremonies.”
