It’s been three years, 10 months, and 25 days since Rihanna released her 2016 album Anti—yes, I counted. While we’re immensely grateful for all the glow-inducing goodness Fenty Beauty has given us over the years (and other goodies from Savage x Fenty and her newest baby, Fenty), WE WAN’T THE ALBUM! Rihanna’s fully aware that her fans are pining for her ninth album, and on Sunday, December 22, she gave us the R9 update we didn’t deserve.
“Update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it,” she captioned a video of an adorable dog bobbing its head to House of Pain’s “Jump Around,” which has already garnered over 10 million views since it was originally posted. It’s a hilarious video that elicits a little chuckle until reality sets in and you realize that we’re still playing the waiting game. Ma’am, what did we do to deserve this treatment?
But what if she’s just building up anticipation to drop the album before the year ends? Last December, a fan asked Rihanna when R9 will be released, to which the singer replied, “2019.”

In an interview with Vogue earlier this year, Rih teased that her forthcoming album will be “reggae inspired.”
“It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks,” she told the outlet. “Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood. It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves. It’s always the same high. Even though I’ve explored other genres of music, it was time to go back to something that I haven’t really homed in on completely for a body of work.”
There are seven days left in 2019, Rihanna. What’s your move?
