Pete Davidson on His Breakups With Ariana Grande, Kaia Gerber, and Kate Beckinsale

Pete Davidson is ready to talk about everything, including the end of three of his most high-profile relationships. The Saturday Night Live comedian did a 52-minute interview with Charlamagne Tha God where he addressed his rehab stints, mental health struggles and drug use (Davidson has PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and depression), and sudden fame after dating Ariana Grande.

First, Davidson confirmed he and Kaia Gerber split up because of his mental health issues. “We were dating for a few months and she’s very young and I’m fucking going through a lot. It was before I was going to rehab. And she has stuff going on. It’s just like, she should be having fun and shit. She shouldn’t have to worry about some dude who has issues and shit. She should be enjoying her work and all that other shit so it just wasn’t like the right place or the right time at all. Also, like, her parents [Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber] were really helpful and stuff so they’re all cool.”

He later explained his health issues also led to his breakup with Kate Beckinsale. “She was really understanding and cool,” he said. “[It didn’t work out] because it wasn’t just the right time. I think I was going into another rehab. I must have a pattern. I wasn’t, like, right yet and she had a lot of acting and work to do. She’s like a superstar, so. It just didn’t work.”

With Grande, Davidson sensed their relationship wasn’t going to last after Grande’s ex-boyfriend Mac Miller passed away from a drug overdose. Grande was understandably distraught, and Davidson tried to be supportive. But the two had only been dating since May 2018 when Miller passed away that September.

”I totally got it [Ariana mourning him and calling Miller the love of her life] ’cause we were only together for a few months,” Davidson said. “She’d even tell you this. I was like, listen, ‘I get it. Do whatever you gotta do. I’ll be here.’ I literally said—I think I said, ‘I’ll be here until you don’t want me to be here.’ I pretty much knew it was around over after that. That was really horrible and I can’t imagine what that shit is like. That shit is just terrible. All I do know is that she really loved the shit out of him and she wasn’t putting on a show or anything. That was fucked up, and prayers to his family and all of his friends, still.”

Davidson also had some genuinely kind thoughts for all his exes: “I want everyone to flourish and be great. Life is too short to just have like any bullshit with anybody, you know what I mean?”

When Charlamagne Tha God asked specifically about Gerber, Beckinsale, Margaret Qualley, and Cazzie David, Davidson had high praise.

He said of Gerber: “Beautiful, smarter than me. If anyone was worried that I was too smart or advanced for her, they do not have to worry at all. She was way, way smarter than I was.”

As for Qualley, he said, “Oh, beautiful soul. Great girl. She’ll win an Oscar. She’s going to win an Oscar for sure. She’s so talented…she’s fucking dope.”

On Kate Beckinsale, he said, “Oh man, fucking legendary. All of my uncles freaked out. Also fucking hysterical. Really, really funny. Like one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Yeah, she’s really cool.”

And asked about Cazzie David, he said, “Ah, she’s fucking hilarious. She’s another of the funniest people I’ve met and like she’ll have a fucking show in a couple years for sure.”
