Miley Cyrus Gives Good Response on Privilege and Her COVID-19 Experience

Some celebrities have navigated speaking out about their coronavirus pandemic experiences better than others. But in her new interview with WSJ magazine, Miley Cyrus gave the kind of measured and self-aware response more celebrities should look to when equating their experiences quarantining in big mansions, apartments, or beach houses with the rest of the world’s.

Cyrus was asked about the booking process for her Bright Minded Instagram Live show and whether anyone had said no to her before (she said some people have left her on read when she has DM’d them about appearing), and if she’d still let them appear on the show if they do respond eventually. That’s when she opened up about how she knows her experience right now isn’t like most people’s and understands that’s why some guests may be hesitant appearing on the show too.

“The door is always open!” Cyrus started, regarding guests. “I’m sure some people I was reaching out to felt the same way I do, which is that my experience is so rare, it almost doesn’t feel right to talk about. This isn’t COVID-19, what I’m experiencing. My life has been pushed pause on, but really I have no idea what this pandemic is like. I am comfortable in my space and able to put food on my table and [I am] financially stable, and that’s just not the story for a lot of people. I’m sure a lot of the hesitation for other people saying yes to doing the show is because it almost doesn’t feel right for celebrities to share our experience. Because it just doesn’t compare.”
