Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Explain Inspiration Behind Non-Profit Archewell’s Name

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have not formally debuted their new non-profit yet, but they have announced the name and explained its origin. The couple has named the organization Archewell, a name inspired in part by their 11-month-old son Archie.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex told The Telegraph that while the pandemic is their primary focus right now, they wanted to explain why they chose the name. The couple filed for trademarks for Archewell in the U.S. last month; the documents more or less broke the news of the name, so Meghan and Harry confirmed it.

The couple has big ambitions for the organization, according to The Telegraph’s review of the documents. Archewell could include “charity and volunteering services, [a] wide-ranging website, and sharing ‘education and training materials’ via films, podcasts and books,” the outlet wrote.

Meghan and Harry said of the name:

Like you, our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global Covid-19 pandemic but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be.Before SussexRoyal, came the idea of “Arche”—the Greek word meaning “source of action.”We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters.Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.
