In the days following the airing of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell Oprah interview in the U.K., Kate Middleton has remained silent on the couple’s claims. But the Duchess of Cambridge and her husband Prince William have been doing a string of events, very much following the British “keep calm and carry on” mentality.
Kate and William visited Westminster Abbey’s coronavirus vaccination center today. The couple both wore masks, and Kate opted to wear a very bridal-esque white lace Catherine Walker scallop-edge coat dress to the site of her 2011 wedding. She wore her hair half up, half down—just like when she got married— and finished the look off with a tan clutch and heels.
Kate’s all-white look comes after she wore a tan monochrome look while visiting Newham ambulance station in East London on March 18:
The Duchess wore a pink scallop-edge top with a matching pink coat and black pants during a visit to School21 with Prince William on March 11. That was the couple’s first public appearance after Meghan and Harry’s interview aired. William told reporters then that “we are very much not a racist family” when asked about the interview and whether the royal family is racist. (Meghan and Harry claimed that the royal family had concerns about how dark the skin of their then-unborn son would be during the Oprah interview.)
Meghan spoke about Kate during her interview with Oprah, discussing how a tabloid story that Meghan made Kate cry ahead of her wedding was actually the opposite in real life: Kate actually made Meghan cry.
“I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing and she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone. To just take accountability for it,” Meghan said.
“There wasn’t a confrontation, and I actually think it’s…I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologized and I’ve forgiven her,” Meghan added later. “What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do but that happened to me and the people that were a part of my wedding going to my comms team, saying, I know this didn’t happen. I don’t have to tell them what actually happened, but I can at least go on the record saying, ‘She didn’t make her cry.’ Everyone in the institution knew it wasn’t true. I’m not sharing that piece about Kate in any way to be disparaging to her. I think it’s really important for people to understand the truth, but also I think a lot of it that was fed into by the media. Look, I would hope that she would’ve wanted that corrected. And maybe in the same way that the Palace wouldn’t let anybody else negate it, they wouldn’t let her, because she’s a good person, and I think so much of what I have seen play out was this idea of polarity where if you love me you don’t have to hate her, and if you love her, you don’t need to hate me.”
Gayle King revealed last week that she spoke to Meghan and Harry and learned that no one in the family—not Kate, not William, not Charles—had reached out to Meghan following the interview.
“I think what is still upsetting to them is that the Palace keeps saying they want to work it out privately but yet they release these false stories that are coming out that are very disparaging against Meghan still,” King said. “No one in the Royal Family has talked to Meghan yet or at this particular time. And I think it’s frustrating for them to see that it’s a racial conversation about the Royal Family when all they wanted all along was for the royals to intervene and tell the press to stop with the unfair, inaccurate, false stories that definitely have a racial slant. And until you can acknowledge that, I think it’s going to be hard to move forward. But they both want to move forward with this. They want healing in this family. At the end of the day, it’s Harry’s family.”
