Kate Middleton and Prince William pulled a very rare move today, publicly displaying their affection for each other at the Royal Charity Polo Cup. The couple kissed in front of photographers, and at one point, they were photographed with an arm wrapped around each other. Kate’s appearance was a surprise but meaningful addition to the charity match.
Kate and William are generally very reserved at public events, not even holding hands often. There is no royal protocol against public displays of affection though; it simply comes down to the couple’s preference.
“It’s up to each and every royal and royal couple how affectionate they are,” Beaumont Etiquette’s Founder and Director Myka Meier, a British American trained by a former member of the Queen’s household, told ELLE.com in July 2018. “There’s no protocol that tells them they can’t hug or kiss or touch. There’s no rule book like that. Each senior member of the royal family is trusted to make the judgement calls of what’s appropriate and when. It’s all about being trusted to make those calls on their own.”
Kate and William also attended a Wimbledon match together yesterday. They were photographed talking in the stands, but no PDA was really shown there, in contrast. Fashion-wise, Kate wore a blue polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich yesterday. She stepped out in a black and white Emilia Wickstead dress at the polo match today with the couple’s dog Orla, another surprise guest making headlines.
