Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had an on-again, off-again relationship that was so tumultuous it eventually inspired songs on Gomez’s December 2019 album, Rare. Since the album’s release, Gomez has spoken out about how her new music helped process her relationship. Now, Bieber is weighing in with his thoughts on his past love life.
During an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, he referenced his “previous relationship” before that with his wife, Hailey Baldwin. Anyone who is aware of the Jelena timeline knows that Bieber’s previous longterm relationship was with Gomez.
“I think I was just hurt from my previous relationship…In my previous relationship, I went off and just went crazy and went wild, just was being reckless,” he said. “[With Hailey Baldwin] I took the time to really build myself and focus on me, and try to make the right decisions and all that sort of stuff. And yeah, I got better.”
In her January NPR interview, Gomez told interviewer Lulu Garcia-Navarro that “Lose You to Love Me,” which came out as a single in October 2019, was a way of saying goodbye to her relationship with Bieber. She also made reference to emotional abuse from Bieber. “I’m very proud of it,” she said. “It has a different meaning to me now from when I wrote it. I felt I didn’t get a respectful closure, and I had accepted that, but I know I needed some way to just say a few things that I wish I had said. It’s not a hateful song; it’s a song that is saying—I had something beautiful and I would never deny that it wasn’t that. It was very difficult and I’m happy it’s over. And I felt like this was a great way to just say, you know, it’s done, and I understand that, and I respect that, and now here I am stepping into a whole other chapter.”
