It’s summer, and pants are optional if you wear the right top, as Jennifer Lopez proved yesterday. The singer was photographed shopping with her 13-year-old twins Emme and Max in Santa Monica, wearing a collared top with a pale pink sweater and white sneakers. She wore her hair in a ponytail and carried a brown purse.
Lopez spoke earlier this week about the changes she made in her life this year, alluding to why she ended her relationship with Alex Rodriguez in April—and how it ultimately led to her finding peace with being by herself. In that place of self-confidence, she found love again with Ben Affleck.
Lopez explained to Ebro Darden on Apple Music 1 that “I think as people, certainly for myself, I’m always trying to grow and evolve and become more fully myself and true to myself. And I think that has been a journey for me and that’s what you guys have watched your whole life. My mission has always been to kind of put love into the world, love and beauty and art. And that has always been my thing, and music and movies and all the things and how it manifests itself. But at the end of the day, what you’re watching, I think when you do watch artists and you’re lucky enough as I am to be able to continue to do what you love for so long, you watch a life. You watch a life unfold in front of you and you watch a person really find their way. And I think for me, where I’m at, how do you process this moment? This moment really was about, for me, not about anybody else. It was about me realizing I was good on my own and happiness starts within me. And once I realized that, things happen. Things happen that you don’t expect to ever happen. I mean, once you get good, once you get to the point where you’re like, ‘This is not right for me, or this doesn’t feel good, or I need to make an adjustment here. This is not really about anybody else but me.’ Once you do that, stuff starts falling into place. And I think that’s how you should process this moment that I feel again. And then it always shows up in the music. Sometimes you have to change direction, even though that might be painful or it might seem weird to other people. It’s really just about who you are and what feels right to you, and that’s what it’s about.”
Lopez added that she has purposely hidden her struggles. “There’s been so many times in my life where I have not felt happy, just like anybody else. And I think I’m good at hiding that from the public because I don’t feel like that’s their burden to carry,” she said. “I don’t put that on them. It’s show business. I put my best foot forward. I’m my best self every time I am out there, because I feel like people need that too. That’s my responsibility as an artist, is to inspire and to help people think and grow about their own lives. They don’t need my problems, so. But I do.”
